Description
The ‘Topfmarkt’ is located in the centre of the historic old town of Apolda. To the north is the old market place, to the south is the brewery and to the east is the hill on which the castle stands. Through the loss of buildings on the edge of the ‘Topfmarkt’ the space no longer has the required identity and spatial definition. These buildings are replaced in the new design by a tall, freestanding wall, which gives the ‘Topfmarkt’ back its frame. In the centre, a rectangular space is accentuated by two lime trees, beneath which benches provide seating opportunities.
The entrance to the brewery is defined by a single large specimen tree. The facade of the new building is integrated into the overall picture by a planting of fastigiate trees.
The paving material of all vehicular areas is a light coloured granite that reflects the original limestone set. As many of the old paving stones as possible were retained and reused in the centre of the space.
