Description
The Beethovenplatz lies between the old town of Weimar and the Ilmpark, a landscape park with UNESCO world heritage status.
The green space is an integral component of the Ilmpark yet fulfills an important role as a buffer between park and town. The historic area - the former ‚Welsches Garden’, a fruit and vegetable garden of the Archduke, has been respected for its specific formal qualities as well as it role as a recreational space for Weimars inhabitants and visitors. The visible components of the underground car park beneath it were either relocated or redesigned to provide a fitting quality to the space.
The planting is reduced - the various parts of the space have been defined by formal rows of trees, precisely cut hedges and lawn areas.
