Description
The heart of the landscape scheme for the ”Pulvergasse“ is the last remaining section of the old city wall that extends between the Johannistor and the Pulverturm towers in the old town of Jena. The existing scheme was built in the 1980’s but is now in a bad state of repair and is no longer accepted by the towns people. The new design solution opens up the space, provides clear sight lines in a scheme that makes the narrow street character more attractive and secure. From the adjacent Johannisstraße a generous paved area extends into the'Pulvergasse' along the town wall.
At the end of this space a bold row of steps, partially seating-steps, provide both access to upper areas and seating for outdoor events. In the vicinity of the Pulverturm the old moat is to be made visible and can be crossed by a modern footbridge. Archaeological excavations allowed many of the foundations and structures of the medieval town fortifications to be integrated into the landscape proposal.
