Description
The citadel Petersberg is situated high above the town of Erfurt and forms together with the cathedral and the church of Saint Severi, the citys crown. The Petersberg has a very varied history; for centuries is was a monastery, but in 1803 it was secularized and became a citadel to control the city. The fortress is divided into several plateaus. The upper plateau, situated opposite the cathedral, offers excellent views across the old town and is very popular with locals and tourists alike.

After completing the construction of the new Information centre it was possible to redefine the open space of the upper plateau and integrate new and existing buildings. The design proposal exposes various original structures so that the history of the citadel can be experienced. At the same time the minimalistic architecture of the new building is complimented by a simple yet powerful natural stone slab pedestral. The reduced design allows the special qualities of the space – the views, the windand the sky – to be experienced intimately.
