Design Competition German Embassy Vienna
Design Competition German Embassy Vienna
Description
At the beginning of the 1960’s the German architect Rolf Gutbrod designed and realised a new German Embassy in the Diplomatic Quarter in Vienna. In the course of the restoration of this, now, historically important building it is foreseen to redesign and extend existing facilities. This goal has been achieved by organising a design competition, which was won by the architects Gildehaus & Reich and our office.
The external areas can be divided into two sections – the outer park ant the courtyard. The original graciousness of the Park has been redeemed by the removal of superfluous branches and vegetation planting of transparent hedges and the opening-up of the lawns with their areas of spring-flowering bulbs. The geometric garden at the main entrance to the embassy responds to the representative location and to the architects desire for transparency and connection.
In the courtyard a new paving of stone slabs and planting containers create architectural accents. The motif of the containers connect the courtyard with the outer park and reflect Gutbrods original intention of connecting the inner and outer space.

This project is due to be realised in 2011.
